African grey parrot determining the sex (Psittacus erithacus)
Gender of African Grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is often unknown, especially for those less experienced in poultry breeding company. The most reliable method for determining sex are: DNA analysis and surgical treatment (endoscopic). There arefew visual clues that can help us realize that sex is our parrot. These indicationsare still debated by specialists and 100% unsafe. They can be applied only if Psittacus erithacus variety Congo (the red-tailed) and only after shedding andparrot has developed adult plumage, that after the age of 18 months.
Congo Males are about 2-2.5 cm larger than females and have wider and flathead. Females have longer and thinner neck and head rounder and smaller thanmales. These details are difficult to quantify if we can view both sexes. Another clue that we can use, but less noticeable to the eye "profane" is the color of the tailfeathers.
